A fun convo with Paul

on grassroots finance transformation

I’ve been thinking a lot about what got me here with my career.
(here = finance director of a fortune 100)

Because I now spend a ton of time coaching and helping others achieve success, I’ve tried to reflect on exactly what’s driving mine.

From what I can tell, it’s primarily tied to the outcomes I’ve been able to drive:

As an individual contributor - I drove a better FP&A Operating System
As a manager - I drove a healthy and high-performing team culture
As a leader - I drove business outcomes leveraging the FP&A Flywheel

Which is funny because at my current level I’m BOMBARDED with emails and DMs from finance technology companies selling me their software.

But here’s the catch: they aren’t actually selling their software… they’re selling Finance Transformation as a way to solve all my problems… and their software is the best way to Transform (of course it is).

Without getting into my overall issue with this (for another time), it’s worth calling out that success at all 3 career stages above had very little to do with technology.

Which led me to come up with the concept Grassroots Finance Transformation.

It’s the combination of the 3 levers I mentioned above (The OS, Manager Playbook, and The Flywheel).

The best part? Anybody can do it.

And I talk about it in my interview with Paul (The FP&A Guy) on his podcast FP&A Tomorrow.
